|Meryl Streep in Hope Springs|
Initially, it might look like the best actor category is stronger than its female counterpart – this is all hypothetical at this point, since most of the presumed frontrunners have not seen the dark of theatres yet – but dig deeper through the year’s performances and you’ll find a wealth of magnificent works by women that seem to be lurking on the fringes with no real chance of a nomination. The problem, as many people have pointed out long before me is twofold. It’s a vicious circle that all of us are accustomed to by now. Studios don’t produce as many female-led films as they do male-centric ones, leading Oscar voters to choose from a smaller pool of candidates. And the best actress category is continuously scoffed at for being relatively weak.

*I've updated my Oscar predictions in all categories, which you can see here. The Great Gatsby has been taken off since it was moved to 2013 and some other minor changes have been made throughout the categories. Be sure to check them out!
